Whether you own a dog, cat, bird, fish, chicken, reptile, small animal, or a horse, North Queensland’s proud pet parents will soon have more shopping options available to spoil their animals of choice.

Many in the community have been asking questions about the concrete building growing into the skyline next to the Fairfield Central Shopping Centre, between the soon-to-open childcare centre Children First Fairfield and Guzman y Gomez Fairfield Waters.

Following the opening of their first store at Domain Central in 2011, Petstock General Manager for Property Rob Foley confirmed that construction commenced earlier this year on their second Townsville store in Idalia.

He expected it to commence trading at the beginning of 2025.

“Business is good, the population of Townsville is growing, and it is a strong regional town that has demand to cater for specialty pet stores,” Mr Foley said.

“The new Petstock store will be a 1000sq m store and will have a full pet specialty offering, along with live animals, grooming services, DIY dog wash and a dedicated puppy school area.

“There will be over 60 new car parks in the centre.”

Mr Foley said they would be recruiting 10 staff to operate the new store, and another new Petstock was planned to support Townsville’s northern suburbs.

“We will be opening a third store in the North Shore development in mid-2025,” he said.

“We will be advertising for new team members (management roles, retail sales and rooming positions) closer to opening both stores.”

With its mission statement, “Together we make an impact for people, pets and the planet”, the Fairfield Central store will become Petstock’s 252nd to open in Australia.

It was a far cry from Petstock’s humble beginnings in regional Victoria when the Young family took ownership of Ballarat Produce in 1991 and later rebranded to Petstock.

The Woolworths Group acquired 55 per cent of the Petstock Group in January 2024.

Petstock has struck a successful chord with pet lovers by offering top-quality pet care products, services, and advice, as well as extra value with its rewards programs.

Fairfield Central said in a post to social media that Petstock was the first of the exciting new retailers coming to the centre that they could reveal.
