Peta Credlin: State of crime, debt, corruption and chaos – it’s time to go, Jacinta

Victoria's mounting crises from soaring debt to rising crime have left the state “broken”, so Premier Jacinta Allan should resign and give the state a fresh start, writes Peta Credlin.

Jacinta Allan must ‘listen to the facts’ on Victoria’s crime crisis

At what point does Jacinta Allan resign?

Record high state debt close to $200bn. Costly rail networks no one wants while roads are left unrepaired, causing accidents and deaths. A divisive Aboriginal Treaty and billions in likely compensation. Biological males in women’s prisons. A litany of anti-corruption inquiries involving her predecessor that have never been reported. Secret China deals. A former chief health officer, Brett Sutton, forced to admit last week that many of the hated Covid restrictions were “never necessary”.

Or will it be Victoria’s crime crisis that ultimately sees her go, or be removed by her caucus?

Because it cannot keep going on like this.

The state is broken, investment is deserting Victoria along with anyone who can take their skills interstate (including, as reported last week, police officers fed up with her soft-on-crime approach) and people literally fearing for their lives as the onslaught of crime continues.

The latest official statistics show aggravated burglaries up 24 per cent, motor vehicle thefts up 42 per cent and retail theft up 28 per cent.

Victorians are being attacked in their homes, attacked on the street and even when they call triple-0, they’re never sure help will arrive given the funding cuts that have hit essential services, including the emergency call centres.

At what point must a politician accept responsibility and stand aside?

After all, ours is supposed to be a system of “responsible government”, and yet no one seems responsible or even willing to save Victoria.

In 2019, I chose to return home to Victoria after living interstate for work, because this is the state I love and where my family lives.

And yet right now, I feel a great sadness about how far this state has declined and the hopelessness so many Victorians feel about it ever returning to its former glory.

If you care about the state, Jacinta, do the right thing and resign.

Give us a fighting chance. Please, just go.

THUMBS UP

NSW Premier Chris Minns - who brushed off criticism about the new top cop’s past saying it’s about the best person to be in the job on NSW’s worst day - not who has a mistake-free perfect record. Bravo.

THUMBS DOWN

Brett Sutton – finally we see admission from Victoria’s ex-Covid tsar that many of the state’s horrific restrictions were never necessary. Any wonder why public trust is so low?
