Susie O’Brien: Why I’m not buying Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s whinge-fest

Meghan Markle’s Oprah interview was pure hypocrisy — and exactly the kind of pointscoring she’s always accusing others of.

Explosive revelations from Harry and Meghan

Whiny, hypocritical and self-serving.

I am not buying the great Meghan and Harry whinge-fest.

There’s something quite galling about people who come from such privilege complaining about how hard they’ve got it.

There Meghan sat in the grounds of a friend’s $20 million Santa Barbara estate, wearing a $4500 dress, complaining about how badly she was treated by her husband’s family.

Then she proceeded to treat them appallingly in return.

She willingly married into one of the most prestigious and wealthy dynasties in the modern world, then trash-talked them when they didn’t recognise her as their No.1 superstar.

Meghan says she’s a victim, but was willing to publicly bully and demean others when it suited her purposes.

The pair said they wanted privacy but then divulged private family information about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Charles.

Meghan’s treatment of her sister-in-law was sanctimonious and petty. Why did she need to make it clear that Kate – not Meghan herself – was in the wrong and made her cry? It’s pure hypocrisy and the kind of pointscoring she’s always accusing others of.

Harry’s treatment of his father was little better. It’s hard to imagine Prince Charles defending himself against claims that he stopped taking his son’s phone calls in a tell-all interview.

The accusation of racism is the most serious – Meghan says a member of the family asked how dark her son Archie’s skin was going to be.

Such claims are impossible to verify and now unfairly taint the entire family given that she wasn’t willing to name the person who said it.

Oprah, their interviewer, has since clarified that it wasn’t the Queen or Prince Philip, but this will do little to fix matters.

Meghan was also at pains to divulge that she was driven to the brink of suicide, but was denied assistance from the palace. Capitalising on public sympathy for her late mother-in-law Princess Diana, she said she wanted help but couldn’t get it.

And yet the reality is a little different: unlike many people with a mental illness, Meghan is well-supported and has the financial means to get all the help she needed.

She also seems unconcerned about the impact of her words on the mental health of others.

Harry was also playing up his victim status, complaining that he was cut off by the royals financially when he wanted to step down as a senior working royal.

But why should he continue to be propped up by the taxpayers when he’s giving nothing back? He was hardly left destitute given his mother’s hefty inheritance.

The pair have now established themselves as willing to trash members of their own family for the right price.

They use their considerable public pull to demean and bully others, while claiming they’re the most deserving of our sympathy.

If they really cared, they’d sort it out in private, not in a $10 million international expose.

It doesn’t matter that they weren’t paid — they generated substantial income for the networks who will return the favour by purchasing their vanity TV projects.
