Kate Freebairn: Heaven runs from Port Willunga down to Second Valley

Port Willunga is the first place I send interstate visitors, writes Channel 10 presenter Kate Freebairn.

Nothing beats a hot South Australian summer.

We are so lucky to have some of the world’s best beaches in our own backyard, and for me the best place to holiday is Adelaide’s mid coast.

The coastline from Port Willunga, past Aldinga Beach down to Second Valley is a slice of heaven.

For a long, lazy lunch, you’ll find me perched on top of the Port Willunga cliffs at the Star
of Greece.

The food is fresh and delicious, and the view from the balcony is unbeatable.

It’s my all-time favourite restaurant, and always my first tip for friends visiting from interstate.

Pack a beach bag, and head down the steep pathway to the white sands of Port Willunga beach.

Pop up an umbrella, close your eyes, breathe in the scent of sunscreen … and voila! Instant relaxation.

If you find yourself sweltering in the SA heat, shelter in the caves carved into the cliffs. Sticking around until the sun goes down is well worth it – the area around the old jetty ruins is without a doubt the most photographed spot in SA.

Our 10 News First #SA-WITHKATE photo segment is always flooded with incredible photos taken during sunset, for good reason.

I also love heading south and spending a day at Second Valley.

The European beach vibe gives off the feeling of being transported to the Amalfi Coast.

The water is aqua blue and crystal clear … but the secret is well and truly out.

The beach is always packed on hot weekends and public holidays, so choose a day midweek and you might be lucky enough to have it all to yourself.

Even better – make friends with someone who has a boat, so you can explore the rocky shoreline to find untouched grottoes and swimming holes!

Don’t leave the region without booking a beachfront dinner at Pearl at Aldinga Beach.

I’d describe it as barefoot luxe – a relaxed feast of fresh, South Australian seafood, and the best spot to watch the sun go down over the ocean with a glass of local McLaren Vale wine.

The mid coast is holiday perfection.

There’s so much more to explore – this is just the start. My partner Nick and I love it so much we’re building a beach house at Aldinga Beach, and with a baby
on the way this year … we have plenty of summer holidays here to come!
