A terrifying croc attack could have been much worse were it not for the bravery of one Territory teen.

A vicious croc attack almost ended in tragedy but the bravery and “quick thinking” of one teenager saved the life of his 13-year-old friend.

In an effort to beat the heat, a group of kids took a dip in the watery mangroves surrounding Numbulwar’s shoreline on the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Northern Watch Commander Steve Rankin said the playful afternoon took a turn for the worse when a 2m croc suddenly grabbed a 13-year-old boy by the leg about 5.30pm Monday.

Sergeant Rankin said the boy clung to mangrove roots while the croc tried to drag him deeper into the water.

He said the boy “made all attempts to free himself” to no avail – but his 16-year-old friend saw an opportunity.

Sergeant Rankin said the older boy “bravely” wrestled the croc and freed his friend, before taking him to safety.

He said the teen then used his own clothing to staunch the younger boy’s leg and groin wounds.

Sergeant Rankin said the 13-year-old was flown from Numbulwar to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.
