Call for witnesses after alleged child assault Anula

A 25-year-old man has been arrested after an incident in which a child was assaulted in Anula.

The child was able to raise the alarm and break free from the man.

Police allege fled into a neighbouring property where he was chased down and apprehended by a resident in the area before police arrived.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jon Beer said police were now calling for witnesses to the incident.

“The girl suffered minor injuries and was very brave in fighting back and getting away. Investigations are continuing to determine exactly what happened and we urge anyone who saw this incident or other unusual activity in the area to contact police,” he said.

“No child should have an experience like this.”

Missing driver rescued after getting bogged on remote Central Australia track

UPDATE WEDNESDAY, JAN 19: A motorist who became bogged on a remote dirt track in Central Australia since Monday has been flown to safety by Northern Territory Police and Emergency Services.

The 48-year-old man was travelling to South Australia from Yulara on Monday afternoon when the vehicle he was driving became bogged on a dirt track due to recent heavy rainfall in the area.

Search efforts were delayed due to inclement weather until earlier today when a fixed wing aircraft was deployed and observers on-board located the man 129kms from Yulara on the Telstra track.

Search and Rescue Incident Controller Senior Sergeant Michael Potts said the rescue was a timely reminder to all travellers to invest in an EPIRB.

“There’s a lot that can be learnt from this, including the importance of EPIRBs and ensuring you don’t underestimate the weather if you’re travelling remotely,” said Snr Sgt Potts

“We’re thankful that in this instance the man had done the right thing by telling others his departure time, the route he was taking and the estimated arrival time.

“Our message stays the same – equip yourself with a personal emergency beacon, know the conditions and prepare accordingly.”

The man was retrieved by helicopter Wednesday afternoon to be taken to the local clinic for treatment to mild dehydration and sunburn.

UPDATE TUESDAY: A LAND and air search is under way after a man disappeared in “severe weather conditions” in Central Australia on Monday.

Police say the 48-year-old man left Yulara, outside the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, to travel to Pipalyatjara in South Australia via the Telstra track on Sunday afternoon.

Local officers had advised the man not to attempt the journey due to the prevailing weather conditions and sounded the alarm when he failed to arrive at his destination on Monday.

Search and rescue co-ordinator, Senior Sergeant Michael Potts, said conditions remained “poor” throughout the area, hampering efforts to find the man.

“Officers were deployed via 4WD to conduct a search of the track and surrounding areas but unfortunately had to return as the track conditions were too wet and we risked getting stuck out there,” he said.

“Low cloud across the area has prevented us from doing an aerial search to try and pinpoint the man’s exact location (but) a fixed wing aircraft has just been deployed.”

Sgt Potts said the man was driving a black Ford 4WD with Queensland registration CRA-845 and had “ample water and some food”.

“But obviously we want to find him as soon as possible to ensure he is OK,” he said.

A flood watch was issued for the area including Yulara late last week in the wake of ex-tropical cyclone Tiffany, with daily rainfall totals expected to be between 70mm and 120mm.
