A recruit constable has been sacked after allegedly making repeated racist remarks – after their colleagues reported their alleged behaviour to superiors.

NT Police on Tuesday confirmed a 52-year-old recruit constable had been dismissed after alleged serious breaches of discipline under the Police Administration Act.

It is alleged the recruit made racist remarks on multiple occasions, which was followed by the recruit being served a show cause letter to explain why his probationary appointment should not be terminated.

The recruit was ultimately dismissed on August 16, police say.

Deputy Commissioner Martin Dole said the recruit’s behaviour was unacceptable.

“Racist conduct will not be tolerated within the NT Police,” Mr Dole said.

“Our members are fully empowered to report any such conduct, and swift actions are taken when it is discovered.

“This dismissal reflects our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and respect within our ranks.”

Mr Dole said an internal investigation had been launched after the allegations were made.

“This action highlights the NT Police’s dedication to upholding its values and ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all.”

The recruit’s dismissal comes after NT Police Commissioner Michael Murphy’s speech at Garma Festival earlier this month – in which he apologised to Aboriginal Territorians for a history of “injustices” involving NT Police.

“I know that I can’t change or undo the past, but as Police Commissioner, alongside our police officers, we can commit to not repeating the mistakes and injustices of the past,” he said at the time.
