Cops charge man who allegedly forced partner into car during assault in Anula last year

A man who allegedly forced his partner into his car while he assaulted her in Anula last year will face court on Monday.

Police have laid a string of charges against a man who allegedly threatened his partner in Anula before forcing her into his car where he continued to assault her.

Officers from the Domestic and Family Violence Unit charged the 34-year-old with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, deprivation of liberty, drug possession and property damage after the incident in September last year.

Detective Senior Sergeant Justin Bentley said the woman eventually managed to escape and the man allegedly fled the scene before police arrived.

“This is absolutely appalling (alleged) behaviour from an individual and what this woman has had to endure is not acceptable,” he said.

“Police and the community have a zero tolerance approach to this type of behaviour and police will prosecute anyone who commits these type(s) of offences.”

He said anyone experiencing domestic or family violence should call police on 131 444, or in an emergency, triple 0.

The man was arrested in Malak on Friday and will face the Darwin Local Court on Monday.

Rude awakening reveals stolen cars

NT Police expect to charge two men with property offences after they allegedly broke into a Rosebery home and stole two cars.

NT Police responded to reports the Lancewood St home was broken into shortly after 5.30am on Saturday.

Police said they engaged in a pursuit after one of the cars – a Toyota HiLux – was seen in Palmerston.

It is understood police used a tyre deflation device on Cox Pensinsula Rd in Berry Springs.

Police said they roped off an area after the vehicle drove into the bushland and two offenders allegedly fled the scene.

They said they arrested a 16-year-old boy without incident before the Dog Operations Unit arrived, and a 21-year-old man was arrested after Patrol Dog Daly found him.

Police said the pair were taken to Palmerston watch house and were expected to be charged with property offences on Saturday.

Watch Commander Nathan Finn said police responded quickly to the incident.

“Police believe the second vehicle, a twin cab Toyota HiLux, is travelling to Wadeye and anyone who has dash-cam footage or information on the whereabouts of the vehicle is urged to contact police on 131 444,” he said.

Cops probe unlawful entry before suspicious Top End house fire

Police are treating a fire, which caused extensive damage to a home in Katherine’s south on Tuesday, as suspicious while they investigate a suspected unlawful entry to the building.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Byron May said emergency services were dispatched to reports that the home on Riverbank Dr was ablaze at about 8.40am on Tuesday.

Sgt May said the home was unoccupied at the time and firefighters were able to extinguish the flames but not before the building suffered extensive damage.

He said investigators believed someone unlawfully entered the premises prior to the fire.

“A crime scene was established, and with the assistance of fire investigators, Katherine Criminal Investigation Branch detectives continue to investigate the matter,” he said.

“Police are urging anyone who may have CCTV footage of suspicious behaviour in the vicinity at that time, or has any knowledge of the circumstances, to contact (us) on 131 444.”

Dog squad captures ‘violent’ DV offender after bushland chase

A man who allegedly attempted to evade police by fleeing into the ocean and later dense bushland overnight will face court.

Police said they received a report of a disturbance at Lake Alexander, East Point about 2am Thursday.

Police allege the 40-year-old man had assaulted a female, 39, while breaching a domestic violence order.

When general duty officers and a dog squad unit attended the scene the man allegedly fled to the beach before leading officers through thick bushland and back into the residential area.

Police then arrested the man without incident at the intersection of Philip St and Hinkler Cr, Fannie Bay after a 30-minute chase.

“This was a particularly satisfying result for all police members including police dog Daly who didn’t miss a beat in tracking the violent offender,” Northern Watch Commander Mick Fields said.

The man was taken to the Palmerston watch house where he will remain until a court appearance on Thursday.

Police said he would face aggravated assault and a breach of domestic violence order charges.

Commander Fields said the woman’s injuries were “relatively minor”.

Drug charges laid after cash and cannabis found

Police have charged a 38-year-old man with drug offences after a search of a vehicle in Katherine allegedly uncovered a large quantity of drugs and cash.

On Monday, general duties police and members of the Northern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and the Dog Operations Unit executed a search warrant on a vehicle outside a business on Cyprus St.

Police allege a large amount of cannabis and cash was found, as well as a number of items police said indicated drug use and supply.

The man was arrested and charged with supplying a commercial quantity of a schedule 2 dangerous drug, possessing a commercial quantity of a schedule 2 dangerous drug, making a threat to kill and using a carriage service to harass.

He was remanded in custody and will face Katherine Local Court on March 20.

Senior Sergeant Warren Scott said police would continue to disrupt the supply of illicit drugs into Katherine.

“Quick action from the team is believed to have made a significant dent in the regional and remote drug trade in the Big Rivers Region,” Sergeant Scott said.

He urged anyone with information on the supply or use of illicit drugs in the Territory to contact police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.

Man charged over alleged hit an run after Palmerston brawl

NT Police have charged a man who allegedly struck a woman with his car in Palmerston before fleeing the scene on Monday.

Police said a large fight broke out on Cornwallis Circuit in Gray, with multiple people reported to be fighting with weapons around 9.20pm on Monday.

A man then fled the scene in a car where he allegedly hit a woman nearby.

The 30-year-old man, who police previously reported was under the influence of an illicit substance, handed himself in shortly after the incident.

Serious Crime detectives have since charged the man with recklessly endangering serious harm, driving in a dangerous manner, failing to stop after accident and aggravated assault.

The 31-year-old woman was known to the alleged offender and is expected to make a full recovery.

The man was bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court on February 15.

Major Crime investigating after woman hit by car

Major Crime detectives are investigating after a woman was hit by a car in Palmerston by an alleged drug-driver on Monday.

Police said a fight between a “large group” of people in Palmerston broke out about 9.25pm before a man fleeing the scene in a car allegedly hit a woman nearby.

The man, who police said was allegedly under the influence of an illicit substance, handed himself in to police after the incident, which left the woman in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said it was unclear what the fight was over.

The driver of the car was expected to be charged on Tuesday.

Police officers allegedly assaulted at East Point

A man has been arrested after he allegedly assaulted two police officers at East Point.

NT Police said the officers responded to a disturbance at East Point early on Saturday afternoon.

They said one officer was spat on, and the second was physically assaulted.

It is understood the man has not been charged, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Assistant Commissioner Martin Dole condemned such behaviour.

“Our officers put their safety and lives on the line everyday protecting Territorians,” he said.

“This sort of behaviour is completely disgusting, unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“Police urge anyone who witnesses anti-social or criminal behaviour to contact 131 444 and in the case of an emergency to call triple-0.”

Men arrested after separate attacks on women in Darwin

Two men will face court after being charged with domestic violence offences in separate incidents.

Police will allege a woman received multiple threats of violence and suffered injuries after being assaulted by her partner over a considerable period of time on Saturday.

A 37-year-old man was arrested over his alleged involvement in the incident and charged with multiple counts of breaching domestic violence orders, aggravated assault and threats to kill.

In an unrelated incident on Sunday, a different man was arrested after the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports a distressed woman was being forced into a vehicle in Palmerston.

Police were deployed, but the vehicle had left the scene before their arrival.

The woman involved in the alleged incident was located by police at a home in Woodroffe.

A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged with breaching a domestic violence order.

Detective Senior Sergeant Justin Bentley of NT Police’s Domestic and Violence Unit said any form of violence was unacceptable.

“Police have a zero tolerance for domestic and family violence and will work around the clock if necessary to protect victims of this,” Sergeant Bentley said.

He urged anyone experiencing domestic violence to contact police on 131444 or triple-0 in an emergency.

“Support services are available including 1800 RESPECT (1800737732) and Lifeline on 131114,” Sergeant Bentley said.
