A dog that mauled its owner after being spooked by a smoke alarm in Sydney’s inner west is set to be euthanised following the attack.

The St Bernard turned on its 47-year-old owner, attacking her inside her apartment on Edith St, in Leichhardt, just before 12.30am on Wednesday.

Neighbours called triple-0 after they said they were woken by the sound of the alarm and screams for help.

Paramedics treated the woman before she was taken to hospital in a serious condition with significant facial injuries.

On Wednesday afternoon, an Inner West Council spokesman confirmed the dog was to be euthanised, with the owner having signed the relevant consent forms.

The spokesman said the dog was being taken to a facility in Yagoona, where it was to be put down later on Wednesday.

One neighbour told The Daily Telegraph she had heard the woman “screaming out for help, like she was being attacked”.

“You could hear the kid and the mum both screaming for help, and the fire alarm going off, and the dog barking a little,” the neighbour said.

“We called triple-0 but weren’t actually sure what was going on.”

The neighbour said he saw the woman taken out to the ambulance “with a towel or cloth shirt wrapped around her”.

“It was kind of scary,” he said.

“We didn’t know what happened until the police arrived and the kid said ‘the dog attacked my mum’.”

A woman living next door said she felt sorry for both the dog and its owner, stating “it’s not the dog’s fault”.

“I’m feeling sorry for the dog and her … she’s lovely,” she said.

“I’m interested to see if she’s OK.”
