More than 1000 homes on Sydney’s north shore were left without power after a car collided with an electrical kiosk, sparking a blaze in Turramurra overnight.

The blaze broke out in a green electrical box, with live electricity still flowing through it as it burned, sending flames to nearby power lines.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews worked for around two hours to bring the situation under control.

“They established an exclusion zone, protected all the surrounding exposures in this case being the telegraph pole was an asset, and some trees. Also some vehicles in and around extreme heat,” Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry said on 2GB.

Emergency services remained on the scene into the evening, with Ausgrid working to restore power to affected properties.

“The fire happened after a car reversed into the small substation/kiosk at around 6.30pm last night,” a spokeswoman from Ausgrid said.

One thousand homes originally lost power, but the bulk were restored by 11pm Tuesday.

“Ausgrid emergency crews are on site now making the complex repairs and power to the remaining 130 customers are expected to return in the next few hours.”

As of midday Wednesday, power was restored to most homes in the area with only 80 left without power on Wednesday afternoon.

The power is expected to return to all homes by 8pm Wednesday.
