A man who beat up a tourist at a Central Coast caravan park has fronted court for the assault.
Terry Dominic Attard, 52, pleaded guilty in Wyong Local Court to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
According to police facts, Attard was staying at the Norah Head Caravan Park on March 22.
At about 8pm, the victim went to use the communal shower block.
A woman walked past Attard’s cabin, where he was sitting out the front with two other men and one of them said: “You have to pay a fee to walk through there.”
The victim, who was walking one cabin over, also heard the comment.
He responded to the group: “She doesn’t have to pay a fee to go anywhere.”
One of the men then replied: “Why didn’t you walk through here then?”
The victim said, jokingly, “Because I’m scared of her.”
He and the woman continued on to the shower block. After showering, the victim returned to his camp and informed his partner about the verbal exchange.
A short time later, the woman walked back to the campsite via the same path. The victim’s partner observed Attard and his friends watching her as she walked past.
She then confronted Attard, who responded: “Why don’t you get your husband to come here then?”
The victim approached the group and shouted: “You can’t disrespect women like that.”
Attard stood up from his chair on the balcony and walked over to the victim, who was on the ground level.
He then swung at the victim, who fell to the ground, hitting his face and left knee on the bitumen.
“The victim felt another punch to the back of his head while he was on the ground,” court documents stated.
Attard’s lawyer told the court his client was extremely remorseful and embarrassed by the incident.
“The caravan is like a second home to him. What started out as lighthearted banter turned into a more serious situation,” the lawyer said.
Magistrate Justin Peach convicted Attard and sentenced him to a two-year community corrections order.
“I’m not surprised the comments you made, made her feel uncomfortable and nervous to walk back and forth to the shower.
“Unfortunately, that kind of ridiculous behaviour is far too common from males, and it is completely unacceptable.”
