T4 Eastern Suburbs Illawarra line delayed by Penshurst signal failure
Hundreds of commuters are stranded in Sydney’s south as trains ground to a halt due to a peak hour signal failure which is still impacting travel.
Hundreds of commuters are stranded in Sydney’s south after a peak hour signal failure at Penshurst has seen the entire train line grind to a halt.
Trains started slowing down and services were cancelled shortly after 8.30am due to urgent signal repairs at Penshurst, on the T4 Eastern Suburbs Illawarra line.
Multiple services up to an hour ahead have already been cancelled, with others delayed by several minutes.
Hundreds of city bound commuters are now stranded at Mortdale - one stop before Penshurst - after trains were abruptly terminated and customers ordered to alight.
Live updates are failing to keep pace with the delays and cancellations, with services with added stops and terminations still appearing as normal.
“Trains may stop on platforms or between stations for longer than normal while the incident is ongoing,” a Sydney Trains update states.
“Some trains may also have changed stops and depart from different platforms than scheduled.
As of 12.45pm. commiters were warned to expect delays of up to an hour.
A statement from Sydney Trains on X, said commuters can “also consider catching a metro service between Sydenham and Martin Place”.
“Repair crew are on site and are working to fix the issue, however we have no forecast at the moment,” the statement said.
