‘Severe’ heatwave warning in place as Sydney cops scorching temperatures

Sydneysiders have been urged to stay safe as the city prepares for another day of scorching temperatures.

Heatwave to sweep east coast this weekend

Sydney’s sizzling weekend is not over — temperatures are forecast to soar over 37C on Sunday.

Punters have been urged to prepare for clear skies and relentless sunshine, as the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe heatwave warning for parts of the Harbour City.

NSW Ambulance Chief Superintendent Steve Vaughan said Hornsby, Parramatta and Richmond were at risk of severe heatwave conditions.

“I urge people in those areas to stay hydrated, keep cool and check in on those more vulnerable and more susceptible to the heat such as the elderly, young children and those with pre-existing medical conditions,” he said.

Saturday’s warm-up act saw the mercury climb steadily, with a high-pressure system parking itself over the southeast.

Richmond and other parts of the outer west reached a top of 37C, with temperatures a little cooler harbourside and in Bondi, sitting at a comfortable 33C.

Sunday will see the heat cranked up a notch — potentially nudging records — with coastal breezes doing little to cool things down.

As northwesterly winds bring in a hot and dry air mass over coastal NSW, coastal suburbs are expected to reverse roles with the Sydney’s west, and the possibility of coastal areas recording higher temperatures than normal is a possibility.

“We expect much of the whole Sydney metropolitan area on Sunday to have similar temperature, due to no relief from sea breezes on the coast,” the BOM spokesman said.

Those escaping the heat are expected to swarm beaches, and Daisy the kelpie-cattledog will be lapping up the extra company at Ettalong Beach.

“That's her daily routine. She loves getting smashed by the waves, she think’s it’s hilarious,” said owner Justin Thompson.

The rescue pup, who was found locked up and abused at sic months old, has since become an “outdoor fanatic” and her 45-year-old owner says she’s never happier than when she’s “chasing up and herding the waves”.

“She comes out in our kayak too, so she’s quickly fallen in love with swimming.”

A southerly cold front will eventually roll in close to midnight on Sunday evening and cool things down, but the timing means Sydneysiders will have little relief from the heat until Monday.

“Sydney will see temperatures from 37C on Sunday and possibly 38C, and then dropping down to about 23 degrees on Monday,” a BOM spokesman said.

“So that’s about a 15 degrees temperature drop in the wake of the changes.”
