Development of a new private hospital has sparked plans for a $500m health and innovation precinct for Sydney’s booming southwest.

The precinct could even become home for a new public hospital.

Developers HomeCo and health care operators Acurio had signed a joint venture agreement for a five-hectare medical precinct to surround approved plans for a new 78-bed private hospital.

HomeCo managing director and CEO David Di Pilla said the latest plans for a $500 million health precinct would include a new biomedical research facility, as well as the potential for a new public hospital.

Mr Di Pilla said the precinct would be “demand driven” and the health services offered there would reflect the needs of the region, while the whole zone has been deemed State Significant, opening the door for research centres and additional hospital and health facilities.

“There’s a huge demand for additional healthcare services in that area,” Mr Di Pilla said.

“Over time you could see a public hospital out there given the high growth nature of the precinct.

“Once you get major health structure, the biomedical and research (facilities) naturally starts to flow.”

“We’re excited about it.”

Construction on the hospital, the first stage of the precinct, is set to start in October.

It’ll be operated by Acurio under a 15 year lease.

It’s the latest boon for health services in Western Sydney, coming a year after the completion of Westmead Health Precinct’s 300-bed Central Acute Services Building.

Acurio Group chief strategy officer, Dr Robert Lin said the move would “elevate healthcare standards” for the south west.

“We bring to this joint venture years of experience and a team of world-class healthcare experts who understand and are committed to the design, development and delivery of innovative patient-centric care.

“The joint venture accelerates our ability to further elevate healthcare standards for the Camden LGA in delivering the highest quality medical services to the local community.”
