A Mid-North Coast dad and mechanic whose passion for mountain biking took a tragic turn faces a “long, slow road” to recovery after a horror crash doing what he loved most.
As Port Macquarie man James Lowe, 33, comes in and out of consciousness, after two weeks in a coma, in the intensive care unit (ICU) his family said he is “lucky to be alive”.
The refrigeration mechanic and electrician was out enjoying his passion for mountain bike riding on Saturday May 17 when a serious crash on a popular trail broke his back and neck and left him with a traumatic brain injury.
Mr Lowe’s wife Erica is a much-loved midwife and has been by her partner’s side as he now faces intensive rehabilitation therapies.
Family friend Allie Isaacs described Mr Lowe as “a beautiful, kind man”.
“He is known for his jovial spirit, infectious smile, and willingness to lend a hand,” Ms Isaacs said.
“The accident changed his life in an instant.”
Ms Isaac is calling on the community to rally around the young family as they face an uncertain future.
A GoFundMe established by Ms Isaac has raised a total of more than $23, 000 and aims to raise $26,000.
