A miner has been hospitalised after being crushed underground at Appin coal mine in Sydney’s outer southwest.

Paramedics were called to the GM3-operated Appin West Colliery in Douglas Park at 7.40am after a man in his 40s was injured underground.

It is understood the man had suffered crushing injuries and it took some time for him to be extracted and brought to the surface by other workers.

The miner suffered back and neck injuries and was transported to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition.

Multiple NSW Ambulance crews responded to the incident along with the Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter, however the man was taken to hospital by road.

A GM3 spokesman said the injured worker had received first aid on site before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

“We have notified the NSW Resources Regulator and will commence an investigation to gain a greater understanding of how the incident occurred and prevent it happening again,” he said.

“The safety and wellbeing of our people remains our highest priority.”

Underground operations did not need to be halted.

However, the incident is the second emergency to unfold at the mine this year, after four miners were injured in a roof collapse in April.

The men were trapped up to their waist when an estimated 100 tonnes of sandstone and gas exploded from the coal seam above, sustaining various injuries including rib, pelvis and vertebrae fractures.

The NSW Resources Regulator continues to investigate that incident.

In 1979 the Appin coal mine was the site of a fatal disaster, when a methane and coal dust explosion killed 14 people.

Three miners were killed by the explosion itself, while 11 others died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
