Latham surfaces at the races amid legal blow

Firebrand politician Mark Latham has walked away with a 12-month good behaviour bond for giving an Australian Turf Club official a foul mouthed verbal spray at the races.

Mr Latham was told of the 12-month good behaviour bond last night and immediately took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to launch a coded attack on racing officials.

In a statement the ATC said it had commissioned an independent report into the incident at Rosehill Gardens on Tuesday April 1 and decided on a 12-month suspended sanction.

The Daily Telegraph reported at the time Mr Latham told ATC head of corporate affairs and government relations Steve McMahon that he could “f*** off” when he approached his table.

The outburst was witnessed by a number of people who said the outspoken politician then vowed to bring down Mr McMahon and ATC chairman Peter McGauran for their role in the proposed sale of Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.

The NSW Premier has welcomed the proposal because it would provide space for 25,000 new homes to ease the housing crisis.

Mr Latham has been an outspoken critic of the $5 billion sale which Mr McGauran has argued would secure the future of the racing industry in NSW.

The ATC statement said the suspended sanction was dependent on him “acting in accordance with the ATC Members Code of Conduct in all dealings with Club staff, ATC members and the board”.

It also said “Mr Latham must refrain from making public statements including on social media that disparage ATC operations pertaining to staff”. Failure to do so would mean he would receive “a 12-month suspension without further warning”.

But despite this Mr Latham took to social media last night with a poorly veiled attack on Racing NSW and its relationship with the media. However it did not attack the ATC or its officials.

Racing NSW has also appointed a former top cop Michael Phelan, former chief executive of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission and ex-deputy commissioner for national security with the Australian Federal Police, to investigate Mr Latham’s trackside rant.
