Paying for a car space is never fun but one man took things too far after allegedly smashing a number of parking meters in a northern NSW tourist town, causing more than $15,000 damage.

Mark Christopher, 37, was charged on Sunday after the alleged malicious damage incident at the weekend which saw 40 meters destroyed in the seaside township of Brunswick Heads, near Byron Bay.

Police will allege the damage was incurred between 9.30pm on Saturday and 7.50am on Sunday.

About 12.30pm on Sunday, Christopher was arrested on South Beach Rd at Brunswick Heads.

He was taken to Byron Bay Police Station where he was charged with destroy or damage property value greater than $15,000.

He was refused bail to appear before Byron Bay Local Court on Monday.
