A man has been shot dead on a residential street in Sydney’s west, with two people arrested and now in custody following a pursuit.
The shooting occurred around 12pm on Carinya Street, Blacktown, with the man dying at the scene.
Blacktown Police Area Commander, Superintendent Brendan Gorman revealed the man who had died was in his early 20s, and was shot in the neck, chest and leg.
“Ambulance, paramedics and police attempted first aid at the scene, however he passed away,” Sup. Gorman said.
“At the same time, police identified a black Mazda ute and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit lasted for approximately five minutes and ended in a short crash.”
Police arrested the two men from the Mazda - one aged in his late teens and the other in his early 20s - and took them to Blacktown Police Station.
It was clarified that a silver car which had been flipped upside during the pursuit was not the same car the alleged shooters were in.
It’s understood one of the men allegedly fled from the scene and jumped over a fence before being dramatically taken to the ground by four officers.
Tradie Ousama Hawat was working at a nearby construction site when he heard sirens and watched the 40-minute ordeal play out.
“I saw someone jump the fence and a copper just grabbed him,” he said. “The cops took him down and arrested him.”
Mr Hawat said he saw another man allegedly punch an officer in the face before running away.
“It was surprising,” he said. He did not recall hearing any gunshots.
It’s believed the crime was linked to a gang.
Sup. Gorman urged anyone with dash cam footage or information about the shooting to contact them.
Police have also warned drivers heading into the Blacktown CBD to seek alternative routes as Kildare Rd is expected to be closed for hours.
‘There is a large emergency services presence in the area, with police establishing a perimeter,’ NSW Police said in a statement.
“There is no threat to the public however, the community is urged to avoid the area.”
Police are expected to front the media with details this afternoon.
It follows a series of alarming public place shootings across Sydney in recent months.
