Machete attack accused Tahi Kedwell fronts Coffs Harbour Local Court

A man accused of a brutal machete attack which allegedly resulted in the victim’s hand being cut off has appeared in court for the first time after he was deemed too unwell to consent to a forensics procedure.

A man accused of a brutal machete attack which allegedly resulted in the victim’s hand being cut off, has appeared in court for the first time after he was deemed too unwell to consent to a forensics procedure.

Tahi Kedwell, 18, stands accused of cutting off a 59-year-old man’s left hand with a machete during a break and enter at a Coffs Harbour property on April 16.

Kedwell appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday after suffering a medical condition that prevented him from attending and from consenting to forensic procedures.

He appeared in Coffs Harbour Local Court via audiovisual link from custody, and appeared in good health, clad in standard prison greens.

Moving forward, police will seek to apply for a forensics procedure after Kedwell had previously been deemed too unwell to consent.

Kedwell is charged with special aggravated break and enter committing a serious indictable offence – inflicting grievous bodily harm – and causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent.

Other charges relate to his arrest later that day at a sports field after a police pursuit in a vehicle police alleged was without license plates, at a sports field in South Grafton.

Kedwell is charged with police pursuit – not stop driving recklessly, two counts of possessing a prohibited drug, never licensed person driving a vehicle on a road and using a registrable vehicle not displaying authorised number plates.

No pleas have been entered.

He returns to court on July 29 and bail remains refused.
