One person is dead and there are major delays affecting motorists along the M1 Motorway after a truck crash near Morisset.
Emergency services responded to reports of a crash between two trucks in the southbound lanes of the M1 near the Mandalong Rd exit about 2.45pm.
Police said the male driver of one of the trucks died prior to the arrival of emergency services. The man is yet to be identified.
The second driver – a 57-year-old man – was not injured.
Lake Macquarie police have established a crime scene and were awaiting the arrival of specialist police at 4.30pm.
South bound lanes on the M1 remained closed on Tuesday afternoon and traffic diversions were implemented.
The roadway is expected to remain a crime scene for a considerable amount of time and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
Police are urging anyone with information about the crash – or was in the area at the time with any available dashcam or mobile phone footage – to contact Morisset police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Southbound traffic is being diverted via Mandalong Rd, Wyee Rd and Doyalson Link Rd.
Authorities have asked motorists to allow plenty of extra travel time.
Meanwhile, a woman has died in hospital following a serious crash near Tamworth a week ago.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Wallamore Road and Evans Street, Westdale, about 10km west of Tamworth, about 6am on July 15 following reports of a two-vehicle crash, involving a sedan and van.
The driver of a black Toyota Camry – a man aged 37 – and a 38-year-old female passenger were trapped for a short time before they were pulled from the wreckage and treated on scene by paramedics.
They were taken to Tamworth Base Hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of a white Toyota van – a 55-year-old woman – was also treated on scene with injuries before she was flown to St George Hospital in Sydney.
Oxley police began an investigation and were informed on Tuesday that the 55-year-old woman had died in hospital.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Inquiries into the crash are ongoing.
