The Hamzy v Alameddine Sydney gang war

High-ranking Alameddine associate Joseph “Jo Fresh” Vokai has been charged for allegedly planning what was ultimately a failed plot to murder rival Ibrahem Hamze.

Vokai, 26 , is currently behind bars on remand at Parklea Prison on charges including knowingly directing the activities of a criminal group, contributing to criminal activity and dealing with property which is the proceeds of crime.

But on Wednesday detectives from the NSW Police Criminal Groups Squad added a further charge to the list — conspiracy to murder.

Police will allege Vokai was involved in the planning of an attempted hit on rival gang boss Ibrahem Hamze at North Sydney last August.

Police sources said Vokai was regarded as the leader of islander gang KVT, who have been regularly used as muscle by the Alameddine organised crime network.

Hamze — who has lost his brother Bilal Hamze and cousins Mejid Hamzy and Ghassan Amoun in the past 18 months — was inadvertently saved when police spotted a stolen Mercedes containing two masked gunmen on a North Sydney street on August 14, 2021.

As they tried to pull the car over the two masked men fled, with police believing they ultimately intervened in what was set to be another escalation in the underworld war between the Hamzys and Alameddines.

Two men — aged 31 and 19 — have already been charged by NSW Police over the ultimately failed hit.

When visited in prison by detectives on Wednesday, Vokai was handed a future court attendance notice.

He is due to face Parramatta Local Court on March 31 where he will be represented by his criminal solicitor Abdul Saddik, who did not wish to comment when approached by The Daily Telegraph.

An arrest warrant was issued for Vokai last December after he disappeared just before police were planning to charge him over the charges relating to his involvement in a criminal syndicate.

He eventually handed himself in to police days later and has been remanded in custody ever since.
