A young NSW family is mourning the loss of their baby boy, Khyden James, who died after drowning in a swimming pool during a family holiday at Villa Besar in Bali this month.
Khyden’s father, Brendan Sharp, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, describing his son as a “one of a kind” child who filled every room with laughter and light.
“Khyden was always happy and cheerful, lighting up the room with whomever was there,” he said.
“His cheekiness and affection were like no other, and he was always dancing and having fun with a side of cheeky.”
Hailing from Singleton in the state’s Hunter Region, Khyden was adored by his siblings Ivie, Savannah, and Huxton.
“He was the best baby brother they could have asked for and the best son we could have ever imagined,” Brendan added.
The family was staying with a group of seven adults and eight children at the villa in North Kuta, Badung, when the drowning occurred on October 19.
Indonesian police said the 14-month-old’s death was attributed to drowning in the villa’s pool.
Bali Police spokesman, Jansen Avitus Panjaitan said the incident was not reported to the police, meaning they were not initially aware of the death.
Mr Panjaitan said officers had pieced together what had happened by speaking to staff at the resort.
He said an adult woman raised the alarm to hotel staff and asked them to call an ambulance about 7.15pm on October 19.
Hotel staff said a short time earlier, the family had returned to the villa from a water park.
Police said hotel staff could not initially contact an ambulance, with one arriving at 830pm, before the child’s body was taken to hospital at 9pm.
The family, now back in Australia, worked with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to bring Khyden home. His body was repatriated on October 22.
Khyden’s aunt, Bronwyn Cox, started a GoFundMe to assist his parents, Grace and Brendan, with funeral costs and other expenses.
“Grace and Brendan face not only emotional pain but also financial strain,” Cox shared on the fundraiser page.
“The unexpected costs to bring Khyden home, the funeral, and the need for time off work are overwhelming.”
The campaign has so far raised over $30,000, almost reaching the overall goal of $35,000.
