A man is dead and another is in police custody following a fatal crash in Sydney’s west.

Police have launched a critical investigation and arrested a 43-year-old man after he allegedly fled the scene of a crash in St Marys.

The man’s dark-grey Holden Insignia sedan collided with a silver Toyota Corolla hatchback early Tuesday morning.

The driver of the Corolla, believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Just after 4am on Tuesday, police officers spotted the Holden stopped on Mamre Rd.

When they approached, the driver sped off towards the Great Western Highway, where police eventually lost sight of the vehicle.

The crash led to the establishment of a crime scene, and a critical incident team from the North Shore Police Area Command is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will also undergo an independent review.

Meanwhile, traffic delays have surged across the city’s west due to ongoing road closures.

The Great Western Highway is currently shut in both directions between Glossop and Sydney streets, with light vehicles being diverted through local streets.

Heavy vehicles are advised to use Mamre Road, the M4, and the M7.

Earlier in the morning, a separate multi-vehicle crash on the M4 at Prospect added to the traffic chaos.

The incident involved seven to eight vehicles and has created significant gridlock for westbound traffic, with delays extending nearly 6km from Mays Hill to the Cumberland Highway.

“Two of three westbound lanes are closed on the M4 approaching the Prospect Highway due to a multi-vehicle crash,” Live Traffic NSW warned.

“Expect delays, traffic is building. Take care, people are on the road.”

Anyone with dashcam footage or information about the incidents is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the website.
