They say politics is showbiz for ugly people, but our Canberra pollies put on a glamorous display that was anything but ugly on Wednesday night.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his partner, finance worker Jodie Haydon, were dressed as if they were off to the opera in Paris as they prepared for the annual Midwinter Ball – a far different look from attire usually seen at the Newtown pub where they had their first date.
Billed as the “premier social event on the political calendar”, the ball was held at Canberra’s Parliament House to raise money for charity.
But it wasn’t just Mr Albanese and Ms Haydon who tried to make a statement.
Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young arrived in a white dress with “end gas and coal” written on the back – a seemingly underwhelming nod to US politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s dress at last year’s Met Gala that had “tax the rich” emblazoned on her back.
Meanwhile, Senator Jacqui Lambie impressed in a reflective full-length gown that looked like something out of the wardrobe of Joe Exotic of Tiger King fame.
And teal independent Allegra Spender, whose mother was famous Aussie fashion designer Carla Zampatti, opted for a black dress with pearl earrings and a bracelet.
To date, the Midwinter Ball has raised over $4m for charities such as the Luke Batty Foundation, Lifeline Australia, RareCancers Australia and The Fred Hollows Foundation.
