Indigenous Senator Pat Dodson, known as the father of reconciliation, has retired after a heartbreaking cancer diagnosis.

Mr Dodson revealed he had resigned on Tuesday morning.

“This morning I announced my resignation as Senator for Western Australia, effective from 26 January 2024,” he said.

“Regrettably, my recent treatment for cancer means that my health, although slowly improving, has left me physically unable to continue as a Senator.

“It has been an honour.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the Senator.

“Senator Patrick Dodson’s plan to retire from the Senate fills me with sadness – but also with gratitude,” Mr Albanese said.

“On behalf of the Labor family he gained when he became a Senator for Western Australia, I wish Pat nothing but the very best as he focuses on his own health.”

Mr Dodson addressed the Labor caucus on Tuesday morning after a moving tribute to the party room from Mr Albanese, who said Mr Dodson was a man of decency, honour and respect.

His resignation was met with a standing ovation from his colleagues and a tribute from fellow indigenous senator Malarndirri McCarthy.
