Construction of a $330m regional NSW hospital is “full steam ahead”, with the project still on track, despite a last minute cost blowout in the millions Premier Minns hoped “would be the last”.
This publication was granted exclusive access to the Eurobodalla Regional Hospital site in Moruya on Tuesday, where development firm Multiplex confirmed the four-level hospital was progressing as scheduled.
The Sydney-based construction firm revealed multiple stair and lift cores were being constructed, with the concrete beams working as structural reinforcement for the massive medical facility.
State member for Bega, Michael Holland, visited the site on Tuesday and confirmed that once operational, the hospital will feature an emergency department, an eight bed intensive care and close observation unit, increased capacity for chemotherapy and renal dialysis, surgical and operating theatres, expanded medical imaging department, including MRI, pediatric and maternity services, mental health beds and enhanced education and training, including a simulation lab.
Dr Holland said he was “thrilled” with the progress.
“You can really see what we envisioned starting to come out of the ground,” he told this publication.
Dr Holland also launched a competition for local schoolchildren to name the site’s crane, with the winner receiving an iPad.
“The name the crane competition is a great way to connect young people with the new hospital and I encourage all primary schools in the Eurobodalla to have a go at naming our new crawler crane,” he said.
The construction update follows a last minute $70m cost blowout, with NSW Premier Chris Minns previously saying he “hoped” it would be the last price increase.
However, he said construction costs needed to increase to ensure services like the ICU were included.
Next on Multiplex’s agenda is completing gusts and staff parking, road excavations and work on the Princes Hwy roundabout leading into the hospital site.
Dr Holland said, once these were done, the facility’s buildings would start to rise.
Despite recent cost increases, NSW regional health minister Ryan Park said the hospital was critical for the ageing region.
“This is an exciting milestone for the Eurobodalla Regional Hospital project, bringing us one step closer to delivering a world-class hospital which will provide high-quality healthcare for generations to come,” he said.
The hospital remains on track to open late 2027.
