A Coffs Harbour mother has spent the last 16 years carrying the ashes of her baby boy, who died minutes before he was born, in her handbag.

Cath Mills has been left devastated after her handbag, containing the palm-sized

box with the ashes, was stolen from her Long St home on Tuesday night.

Ms Mills said she had always been careful with her baby boy Finn’s ashes so that she was always close to him.

“I’m too scared to have them in the house in case there’s a fire and I’m too scared to have them in the car in case they get stolen, so I have him in my handbag,” Ms Mills said.

“I just need him home,” she said.

“I don’t care where you put it.

“It doesn’t have to be here and it doesn’t have to be at the police [station] either. Just take him anywhere.”

She said the community’s response to her social media post asking for people to look for the small box had lifted her spirits.

“There’s people out looking to see if my bag has been dumped,” she said.

“I’m sure someone will recognise the box. I need to bring him home.”

Coffs/Clarence police have confirmed the matter is under investigation.
