Bryce Williams and Christopher O’Brien found not guilty of murdering gangster Mejid Hamzy
Two men accused of executing gangster Mejid Hamzy have been found not guilty, leaving authorities without a single murder conviction for one of Sydney's most notorious underworld killings.
Two men have been found not guilty of executing gangster Mejid Hamzy leaving authorities in the position where no one has been convicted for murder over one of the state’s most notorious underworld killings.
Hamzy was assassinated in a hail of bullets outside his Condell Park home in October 2020 with the suburban murder marking the start of the underworld war that continues to plague Sydney.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal that the two men accused of being the hired guns, Bryce Williams and Christopher O’Brien, have each been found not guilty of murder.
A third man — who can’t legally be named — was sentenced to three years and six after pleading guilty to being an accessory after the fact to the murder for supplying getaway cars to the shooters.
He had been charged with murder, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charges after negotiations with prosecutors.
The case was being heard by Justice Julia Lonergan behind closed doors for more than a year with the public unable to be made aware of the details of the case because of several non-publication orders.
Those orders expired on Wednesday when a jury found Williams not guilty of murder following a mammoth 13 week trial, which began in September 2025.
Outside court, Williams’ lawyer Jessica Fahmy said, “The jury came to the right decision and my client is looking forward to getting on with his life.”
O’Brien was acquitted of murder last April.
But the decision was hidden under a non-publication order because Williams was still to stand trial.
O’Brien’s lawyer Mohammed Chahine said, “My client always maintained his innocence and is pleased with the jury’s verdict.”
Mejid, 44, was the older brother of notorious crime boss Bassam Hamzy who is serving 40 years for a long list of offences including murder and running a drug operation from behind bars.
Police alleged that Mejid was at war with a rival crime boss who can’t legally be named because he is before the courts.
The crime boss had accused Mejid of stealing a 400kg drug shipment, worth $39 million, which had been smuggled into Australia.
Mejid had put out a contract to have the crime boss murdered.
But police alleged the crime boss got in first with a contract of his own to have Mejid killed.
Officially, Hamzy ran a gourmet chocolate and dessert bar.
But behind the scenes he was an influential crime figure who was believed to be behind the 2016 murder of hit man Hamad Assad.
His execution was the second of 13 underworld murders that have plagued Western Sydney since August 2020 and drew attention to the underworld war that is still unfolding.
Mejid was murdered outside his home on October 19, 2020.
In the early morning hours, Mejid took a moment to realise the killers were running towards him.
They fired 14 shots — four of them hit Mejid.
He didn’t go down immediately.
Somehow he ran 200m along Simmatt Ave and onto Curtin Pl where he collapsed and died.
After an exhaustive two year investigation, Williams and O’Brien were arrested on March 10, 2022.
O’Brien was released earlier this year.
Williams was granted bail on drugs charges in the NSW Supreme Court on Thursday and will be sentenced in January.
