Bricks and sheets of iron have collapsed onto a footpath in inner Sydney this afternoon, following a surge of heavy rain and winds.

An awning has collapsed onto a footpath in inner Sydney following a surge of heavy rain this afternoon.

Hundreds of bricks and sheets of corrugated iron crashed to the ground on the corner of Epsom Rd and Botany Rd in Zetland around 4.30pm.

Witness Nayara Vetorello said there was no warning the awning was about to come down.

Miraculously no one was walking on the footpath at the time, as the debris rained down outside the To Thai For restaurant.

Nayara Vetorello was working at the Brazilian Flame restaurant next door when the bricks fell.

“There was strong winds and rain and suddenly the roof just fell,” she said.

“Luckily no one was walking underneath — in a minute everything was fine and then boom.”

Bystanders nearby stepped in to clear the bricks from the road.
