The Nine Network has agreed not to use any social media photographs or videos of Bondi Junction stabbing victim Dawn Singleton, after an extraordinary court move by her fiance and mother.
Ashley Wildley, a NSW Police detective, and Ms Singleton’s mother Julie Singleton filed an injunction in the NSW Supreme Court last Friday, ahead of a 60 Minutes segment with ad tycoon John Singleton, which aired on Sunday night.
Court documents revealed Ms Singleton’s relatives claim the use of the photos and videos is a breach of copyright.
Ms Singleton’s mother, sisters and extended family are understood to have been against Mr Singleton participating in the television interview.
They singled out two photos which must not be used, as well as any other images sourced from the 25-year-old’s personal social media accounts.
Nine made an undertaking, without admissions, that it would not publish any material of Ms Singleton which has come from social media accounts in her name, including TikTok, Instagram and Facebook.
The matter is listed for further argument on Wednesday.
An edited version of 60 Minutes went to air with Mr Singleton insisting the coronial inquest into the six deaths at the hands of Cauchi would only cause further grief for victims’ families.
“It’s absolutely stupid, I think it’s just a waste of time, if it’s going to prove anything at all,” he told 60 Minutes.
The Daily Telegraph revealed on March 30 that Mr Singleton wanted the inquest to be shelved, to save families going through “more torture”.
“We can’t stand reliving this again. If it was going to bring some justice I would understand, but it can’t, so it’s just unfair,” he said at the time.
Ms Singleton and Mr Wildley were just weeks away from getting married when she was killed while out shopping for the big day, on April 13 last year.
Mr Wildley had been called to work an overtime shift when the rampage happened, only to arrive at the scene and be informed his wife-to-be was one of the victims.
Five other people lost their loves that day including Ashlee Good, Jade Young, Faraz Ahmed Tahir, Yixuan Cheng and Pikria Darchia.
