He came into the Australian schools rugby championships virtually unknown but teenager Chayse Geros has left it in a hurry after turning heads as a standout halfback at the event famed for launching the careers of future Wallabies.

A student at St Augustine’s on Sydney northern beaches, Geros created a buzz at the tournament on the Queensland Sunshine Coast being used to identify players for the Australian U18 rugby team and Australian Schools team to play a series of matches later this year.

“He is something else,’’ said NSW I coach Anthony Calavassy after his side won the Australian schools trophy against NSW II in a game Geros secured Player of the Finals honours.

Calavassy said his athletic young charge, who caught the eye of selectors at recent trials in Sydney, has in the past suffered from playing the same position as one of the rising stars of rugby Angus Grover but believes the tournament has well and truely put him on the elite rugby radar.

A member of the NSW II side which won the Australian schools titles last year, Geros stepped up into NSW I in 2025 and was a major player in their success, scoring multiple tries and having a hand in numerous others.

But Geros had to rush away after the conclusion of the schools rugby event to fly back home before a quick turnaround to get to Coffs Harbour for the Australian Secondary Schools rugby league championships

“My first game is on Sunday,’’ said Geros, in the NSW CIS side at Coffs Harbour and plays SG Ball with the Canterbury Bulldogs “at centre or hooker”.

The 17-year-old said he has hit the best form of his career this year by training harder and smarter.

“It’s my last year of school and I’d like to play footy when I leave,’’ said Geros, who has sparked both rugby and league interest.

“I’ve just been training more and working harder in the gym.’’

Geros hails from Curl Curl and has two sisters who play elite softball.

But his passion is football.

“I started from a young age at the Harbord Harlequins and then went to the Manly Marlins and the Warringah Rats,’’ he said.

“I went to school at Balgowlah High so there wasn’t a lot of rugby y there but I move to St Augustine's in Year 10 and played more.

“I made the schools ISA rep teams for rugby but I never made the Waratahs pathway or anything.

“I just like how the game is, there’s not so much stop and go in it.’’
