A snap strike lasting just five minutes early Thursday morning threw parts of Sydney’s rail network into disarray, causing widespread delays across all train lines.

The protected industrial action, which began shortly after 3am, has led to “larger than normal gaps in services,” according to Transport for NSW.

“Trains stops and platforms may change at short notice and some trains may be cancelled,” Transport for NSW said in a statement.

“Extra travel time may be experienced in some cases and you may need to change to continue your trip.”

A commuter in Sydney’s southwest said his train had come to a stop for about 30 minutes.

“Eventually I got a train from Campbelltown but we’ve been stuck here for 30 minutes because the driver had to be changed,” Peter told 2GB radio station.

“So we’ve been waiting 30 minutes for a release driver.”

Trains on the T8 Airport and South Line will now end at Campbelltown instead of Macarthur, and run to the city until further notice.

“Please catch local buses or delay travel if possible, and allow plenty of extra travel time,” T8 Sydney Trains said on X.

Passengers have been urged to use Metro services between Epping, Chatswood, Central, and Sydenham to navigate the disruptions.
