Treaty Commissioner Mick Dodson has resigned from his position saying his behaviour ‘fell short of the high standards’ he sought to uphold.

UPDATED: NT Treaty Commissioner Mick Dodson has confirmed his resignation and that his behaviour “fell short of the high standards” he sought to uphold.

In a statement Mr Dodson said he was coming to terms with significant childhood trauma which resulted in a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder.

“Over the years, I have tried to manage this as best I could with limited professional support, which has also been interrupted during the pandemic,” he said.

“The events reported recently are deeply regrettable and I sincerely apologise to the individuals involved. These incidents have also given me cause to stop and reflect, and to seek treatment for these previously unresolved issues.”

Mr Dodson said his actions didn’t reflect his commitment to helping others.

“While disappointing, my actions do not reflect my commitment to helping others in a lifelong career dedicated to my people and public service. After investing the time needed to work on my health, I intend to continue working for my community and my people.”

EARLIER: Treaty Commissioner Mick Dodson will resign from his role at 5pm Friday.

In a statement the Government said: “The Northern Territory Treaty Commissioner Mr Mick Dodson has tendered his resignation from the role. The resignation will be effective from the close of business today (Friday).”

It follows accusations he verbally abused and threatened an Aboriginal woman at TIO Stadium in January.

Professor Dodson – a former Australian of the Year – had not denied the allegations but said he had no recollection of the incident.
