By the end of this week, Darwin Middle School, Casuarina Senior College, Dripstone Middle School, Taminmin College, Nightcliff Middle School, Palmerston College (Rosebury Campus, Middle school), Katherine High School, and Sanderson Middle School will each have one dedicated officer in operation.

The seven remaining officers will be in Darwin High School, Centralian Middle School, Centralian Senior School, Nhulunbuy High School and Tennant Creek High School by Term 3.

Last year school-based police officers were redeployed to other duties as part of the COVID-19 response. Police still maintained four officers who serviced schools in Darwin and Katherine.

An NT Police spokeswoman said the program between NT Police and the Department of Education was an increase of three schools and five officers.

“Our School Based Police Officers are working alongside teachers to deliver a tailored consistent education program, aligned to the Australian Curriculum learning areas of health, safety, wellbeing and resilience,” she said.

“This new and expanded program creates an opportunity for our officers to collaborate and build relationships with school leaders, community groups, and agencies to support young people who are in need or at risk. It is about improving our young people’s understanding of community and safety issues.”
