Selena Uibo calls out CLP on unfunded promises

The Territory opposition has accused the government of lacking transparency on spending.

The Territory opposition wants the government to spell-out how it intends to pay for $280m in election promises.

Opposition Leader Selena Uibo said Labor would use this week’s parliamentary sittings to prosecute the government on unfunded promises and budget black holes.

She said Treasury’s assessment of the CLP’s election commitments released three days before the August 24 election showed $224m in operating commitments and $56m in revenue measures.

She said the CLP said this would be offset by $185m in cuts and $42m in scrapped capital works projects.

Opposition Leader Selena Uibo wants more transparency on debt.

“This week in the Northern Territory parliament we’ll be asking chief minister Lia Finocchiaro how she is going to pay for the $280m worth of election commitments which are unbudgeted,” Ms Uibo said.

“We did ask the chief minister and her treasurer last week, and both of them were unable to answer the question …”

“The CLP has promised Territorians to be an open and accountable government, and yet they are silent on how they’re going to pay for these election commitments.”

The CLP was critical in opposition of the government’s budgeting, with net debt in 2024-25 topping $11.05bn. In 2022 the NT Government introduced a debt ceiling capped at $15bn. The opposition was contacted for a response.
