NT Police have arrested a man who allegedly assaulted his partner with a metal bar and resisted arrest by biting an officer and drawing blood in Darwin.
The 39-year-old was alleged to have assaulted a woman with a metal bar at a home on Tomaris Court about 7.25pm on Wednesday.
Police identified the alleged offender on arrival, however the man allegedly became violent and attempted to flee biting an officer on the arm, drawing blood.
The victim and other onlookers allegedly became aggressive toward police too with some bystanders allegedly punching an officer on the back of the head.
Police used OC spray on the alleged offender and in the process of placing him in their vehicle he kicked out at both officers multiple times.
Both officers were assessed at the scene, while the officer who had been bitten was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment and blood testing.
The 39-year-old remains in police custody and is yet to be charged.
Acting Commander of Police David Moore said it was “deeply concerning” the officers had allegedly been “violently attacked” when coming to assist.
“Our police do not deserve to be assaulted while protecting and serving the community,” he said.
“Biting another person is not only disgusting, but the flow on effects emotionally and potentially to the health of our members is abhorrent.”
