Plea for Territorians to get flu jab ahead of winter season

While plenty of Territorians are queuing up for their COVID-19 jab, health officials are urging everyone to still get their flu shot.

TERRITORIANS are being urged not to forget their flu jabs this year amid the scramble for COVID vaccines.

But those that are eligible for both virus-fighting vaccines are being urged to leave a two-week gap between receiving doses of either.

“This is a call out to all Territorians to check in with their GPs or their health clinics or pharmacists whether they’re eligible for their flu vaccine,” Dr Dana Fitzsimmons from the Top End Health Service said.

Among those who received their flu vaccine yesterday was health minister Natasha Fyles.

Health Minister Natasha Fyles is urging Territorians to get the flu jab as well as the COVID-19 vaccine.

Dr Fitzsimmons said it was too early to determine how bad this year’s flu season would be.

But she said anyone seeking to get their flu vaccine should wait at least two weeks between.

“So the recommendations are that there should be a two-week, or 14 day break between getting your COVID vaccine and your influenza vaccine, so that’s really important to remember.”

Ms Fyles, who received her jab on camera, said she wanted Territorians to follow up with their flu vaccines in 2021, after a record number of doses were administered prior to last year’s flu season.

“The vaccine is here in the Territory, and I encourage everyone to reach out and get vaccinated,” she said.
