Palmerston Indoor Sports Centre to close down after 30 years
A popular Top End sports centre will close its doors for the final time this month, with many regulars calling it the end of an era.

The Palmerston Indoor Sports Centre will close its doors for the final time this month after 30 years of fun.
The popular sports hall that offers beach volleyball, indoor cricket and indoor netball competitions has long been a hive of activity for sports enthusiasts in Palmerston and beyond.
However, the administration team has announced it will be closing for good after its final set of grand finals on Friday.
“We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been part of this amazing journey,” a post from the centre’s team read.
“From the teams, players, and families to our loyal supporters – your energy, passion, and dedication have made this place so much more than just a sports centre.
“While this chapter is coming to an end, we will always cherish the memories we’ve created together.
“Thank you again for being part of our community. Let’s make this last week one to remember.”
The news was met with sad replies from many who had made the centre their sporting home across the journey.
“It’s definitely an end of an era,” one user wrote.
“Over the years I met some lifelong friends through Palmerston Indoor Sports Centre.
“As one chapter ends a new begins, all the best for your new endeavours, thank you all for the memories and late night beers and chats.”
Another called it “extremely sad news” to hear of the closing having “spent decades in that place with so many good memories”.
Others reflected on the destination as their escape on weeknights.
“This was my Monday night escape, so devastating,” a poster said.
“This was our “mums” weekly outlet. Our way of getting in some fitness while enjoying ourselves and having a laugh.
“I really hope another centre in the Palmerston region opens up. I feel like this centre is part of my childhood. I’ve been coming and going for almost 20 years.”
