Southern Districts have kicked off the New Year with the same winning form they left 2024 proving their efficiency in all areas in their victory over PINT.
Districts sat clear of their NTFL competition with just one loss ahead of the break owing to their incredibly strong list.
The Greenants laid down the early challenge, but didn’t consolidate while their former defender Steven Motlop scored three goals in the Crocs 12.9 (81) to 6.9 (45) victory.
As if they needed more talent in their arsenal already containing former AFL players in Motlop and Jed Anderson, Districts added 124-gamer for Port Adelaide Tom Clurey to their back line.
The defender added experience to a backline already producing strong outings week after week, with Jordan Johnston, Connor Giddings and a repositioned Jonathon Ross among the standouts.
However, it took a bit for the rest of the setup to shake off the post-break cobwebs with the Greenants instead running in numbers to get the early ascendency.
Alex McCarthy was the lone goal scorer in the opening quarter, and though they had more chances created by their midfield again PINT struggled in front of the posts.
Those struggles gave Districts time to work into the contest and come the second quarter all the scoring was down their end with five straight to stamp their authority on the occasion.
Motlop was a big presence in the forwards against his former side calling for everything alongside Will Farrer, who ended the day with two goals for his efforts.
Then the usual midfield workhorses of Matt Shannon, who was a constant ball provider, and Anderson, who scored three himself, were everywhere bringing the pressure to the contest.
Thomas Clarke had a strong showing on the wing supplying the ball, while the aforementioned defensive setup left little room for the Greenants to work with through the middle half.
PINT edged their way back into the contest in the final quarter finding parity in the midfield battle through the workrate of Thomas Schott and Elliot Chalmers.
That led to some flow in the goal scoring as Districts settled down on the pressure front, but by then the match had been settled.
“It’s good to get back out there and get some actual footy fitness after the past few weeks and blow the cobwebs out,” Jordan Johnston said.
“The first quarter we knew it was going to be a scrap, and then from the second quarter we took the game on and played our way as we got used to the conditions.
“Being in the back line is different for me, I’ve played my whole life up forward but we have a solid back six here and we all back each other in and play to each other’s strengths.
“Then we had Clurey in, which was helpful with his experience, he’s still getting the engine going and getting used to playing up here but his experience is what we need.”

PREVIEW
After a successful move into the frontline, Southern Districts goal machine Steven Motlop is poised to be a serious thorn in the side of his former club PINT.
The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 5.15pm on Sunday.
Motlop will meet his former club for the second time this season coming out of the Christmas break, making it into the Crocs best the last time the two sides clashed.
But after a move into the forward 50, which has reinvigorated the ex-Power midfielder with 13 goals in three games, all eyes will be on Motlop in the revenge clash.
The Crocs have also been well-serviced by midfield machine Jed Anderson, who has racked up 267 disposals over the first half of the season, only trailing Tigers workhorse Brodie Filo in that department.
While the Greenants have struggled to put wins on the board this season, they could ask some serious questions of the NTFL ladder leaders.
Christopher Nield has been far and away PINT’s best in recent weeks, while veteran utility Tom Schott has shown plenty of leadership this season.
It’s clear the Greenants are missing the influence of club captain Matthew Ryan on the field, and will be hoping they get him back at some point in the second half of the season.
Watch the full replay at the end of the game.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
