Replay: Palmerston v Tiwi Bombers - 2024-25 NTFL Women's Premier League Round 15

The Tiwi Bombers have clutched a one point win to strengthen their finals credentials despite a strong North Darwin fightback in the third quarter.

The sides came into the contest locked in a three way battle with the Darwin Buffaloes on 24 competition points, with only two able to go into the final five.

A fast-starting Bombers outfit, spurred on by four goals from Maria Rioli, survived a late comeback to win the day 7.4 (46) to 6.9 (45).

The Magpies, honouring their North Darwin heritage and club legend John Stokes in their final home match of the season had the worst possible opening quarter.

A scoreless period put the Pies under the pump physically and mentally, handing the edge to Tiwi who were ferocious on and off the ball.

The Bombers, with a number of debutants, showed a level of maturity and togetherness you’d hope to see with finals just around the corner, allowing them to remain in the fight.

Maria Rioli was deadly when on the field, turning the match on its head with a hattrick in the second, elevating the hopes and scoreboard of the visitors.

North Darwin regained momentum after the short break as Marika Carlton switched, aided by efforts from Iesha Ronberg and Jahla Hunt, the latter laying on tackles worthy of recognition.

It was only one point the difference in the final term, however there was little in terms of attacking fluidity from either outfit, but sprinkled in some sound defence.

A clutch Freda Puruntatmeri score sent Tiwi ahead once more, and despite a run of four North Darwin scores they could not get the necessary goal.

The four points places the Bombers in fourth as of the match ending, a result that an injured Sarah Darcy said was very well deserved.

“We had a brilliant start holding them scoreless and being energetic and up for the contest,” she said.

“We took a step back in the second which allowed Palmerston to get a run of goals and get back into the match.

“But after the half time break there were a number of girls who stood up and took leadership and accountability and steered from the front.

“The win is indicative of us playing as a unit and fighting for each contest and not letting our heads go, so it’s a win we’re all very proud of.”

PREVIEW

Palmerston and Tiwi are locked on 24 points each in the women’s premier league, alongside the Darwin Buffettes, but only two of these sides will finish in the finals positions.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 12pm on Saturday.

That sets this encounter as a key one in the battle for finals with the winner here likely to become a favourite to finish in the top five.

The Magpies are currently ahead on percentage and have the home ground advantage, however they were well beaten last time they faced the Bombers back in Round 9 on Bathurst Island.

However, with the return of Tatyana Perry and some big performances from the likes of Marika Carlton, Ella Ward and Hannah Torsney the Magpies have been in great form of late.

Palmerston were narrowly beaten by top two sides PINT and St Mary’s in their recent meetings and have dominated the sides they’ve been expected to beat.

The Bombers have meanwhile been surprise losers to resurgent sides such as the Buffaloes and Waratah since the Christmas break forcing their tumble down the table.

There’s plenty of firepower in the Tiwi side including Sarah Darcy and Maria Rioli, they just need to find their momentum again if they’re to find their way back into a finals berth.
