NEURON Mobility could act on advice from Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis and lock eScooters out of the CBD’s entertainment precinct at night to reduce the temptation of drink-riding.

Enforcing this would only require changing existing geofences, which restrict eScooters within the CBD, Larrakeyah, Cullen Bay and the Gardens area while the eBikes can move from the northern suburbs into the city but are excluded from the CBD grid.

A Neuron Mobility spokeswoman said software had the capabilities to restrict their scooters from entering areas.

“In Darwin geofencing technology is used to control where our e-Scooters can be ridden and parked and how fast they can travel in certain areas,” she said.

“We continue to work closely with the council and other important stakeholders to integrate into the city in the best possible way and this includes changes to the riding area as well as refining our slow zones, no-go zones and parking zones – undoubtedly we’ll continue to make changes over time.”

The smart mobility company maintained safety was a top priority and they did what they could to warn of dangers and ensure people didn’t ride while inebriated.

“We are a safety focused company and all of our riders sign up to a comprehensive list of riding rules before they are allowed to take their first trip,” the spokeswoman said.

“The rules are clear when it comes to not riding under the influence of alcohol, and of course they get guidance on where and how to park and ride.”

Council staff will look into the best way to address problematic eScooter behaviour in the coming weeks.
