One immigrant is looking forward to fully participating in Australian civic life after gaining their citizenship on a day with special meaning in the Northern Territory.

Noriel Ros, originally from the Philippines, was one of 43 Red Centre residents who received their Australian citizenship on Territory Day.

Ms Ros said becoming an Aussie citizen was a big milestone, as she could “now fully participate in the civic life of the country I’ve grown to love and call home”.

“It is also a recognition of the journey, the ongoing adjustments, and the learnings I continuously adapt to, to become part of this community,” she said.

Ms Ros has been living in Australia since 2019, and said she “never felt isolated” living in the Red Centre capital.

“Living in Central Australia has been both humbling and enriching,” she said.

“It’s a place that teaches you to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the small things.”

The ceremony was held at the Alice Springs Town Council chamber lawns, with friends and family turning up to celebrate.

The new Australians hailed from many corners of the world such as Europe, Africa, North America, and Asia.

Alice Springs mayor Matt Paterson said it was an “incredibly special day” welcoming the 43 new citizens.

“Having administered quite a few ceremonies now, it truly never gets old seeing the massive smiles on the faces of our new citizens,” he said.

“It puts into perspective how lucky we are as Australians and fills me with pride to see people celebrate their special day with friends and family.”
