Man arrested after allegedly striking elderly woman at pedestrian crossing

A driver who returned a positive drug reading has been arrested after he allegedly struck an elderly woman in Palmerston, sending her to RDH in a ‘serious but stable condition’. Read the details.

An elderly woman riding a mobility scooter was struck by a car near a Palmerston shopping centre about 10am on Thursday, suffering serious injuries.

The 43-year-old man driving the vehicle remained at the scene where he allegedly returned a positive roadside drug test and was arrested.

The 65-year-old woman was thrown from her scooter as she was using the pedestrian crossing on Temple Terrace, suffering multiple injuries to her leg, pelvis and ribs, NT Police said.

She was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

It is understood the car struck the woman at a crossing near the roundabout that separates Palmerston Shopping Centre and Oasis Shopping Village.

Police said the Temple Terrace outbound lane remained closed to traffic, with motorists asked to avoid the area where possible.
