A GROWING demand for tertiary education in the Northern Territory has prompted a business college to propose its second Australian campus in Darwin’s CBD.

Sicop Education and Technology, which trades as the Gateway Business College, has applied with the NT government to overhaul the ground level of 25 Cavenagh St, Darwin.

It is latest in a string of education projects unveiled for the CBD, the largest of which is Charles Darwin University’s massive City campus.

Development application documentation says the latest proposal includes six classrooms with capacity for 150 students.

Gateway Business College’s website says the company is based in Burwood, in Sydney’s inner west, and offers information technology, human resources, business and management courses.

“The proposed education establishment comprises internal modification of ground floor tenancy to an existing building in order to accommodate approximately 150 students and staff members,” the development application said.

“(Gateway) intends to offer up to tertiary level educational courses for both local and international students, however, most of its recruitment comprises international students,” it said.

Floor plans show six classrooms, three offices, a student study area and a reading room located along a single floor of the building.

The proposal is the latest in a string of developments catering towards Darwin’s growing appetite for tertiary education.

“At present there is a growing need by private institutions operating in other parts of Australia to establish themselves in the Northern Territory,” Gateway Business College said in its development application.

“The current building is of suitable size to accommodate small tertiary education providers who are known to complement the educational activities provided by larger institutions,” it said.

“These smaller private institutions play pivotal role in an evolving education market by providing limited services.”

The application also said the plans would “add to commercial activity within the locality and promote diversity of land uses in the area.”

Education has had a growing presence in Darwin’s CBD in recent years, with the Canterbury Institute of Management setting up new digs along McMinn Street.

Charles Darwin University also started construction of its new $250 million ‘Education and Community Precinct’ in October last year.

Construction will create over 700 jobs during construction, with the project set to be complete by 2024.
