Federal Labor commits to 730 new Katherine homes with infrastructure cash splash

The Albanese Government is investing $24m for crucial infrastructure and community facilities across the Northern Territory.
As well as $7m on enabling infrastructure to facilitate construction of up to 730 homes and parklands within the mixed-use Katherine East Neighborhood Centre, it will spend $4.8m expanding the Ngurratjuta Service Hub.
In addition, the commonwealth is investing $1.1m installing splash pads and interactive features such as dumper buckets, ground sprays, water cannons and an eight-seat picnic shelter at Urapuntja Splash Park.
Nitmiluk Tourism Services Precinct will get $4m from the government’s precincts and partnerships program to develop a master plan to upgrade infrastructure and the Central Australian Regional Community Precincts, including Ti Tree, Atitjere, Santa Teresa, Papunya, Yuendumu and Ntaria, will receive $4.7m for planning and design.
The commonwealth is also investing $1.9 million to upgrade sections of the Willowra main access road to improve road safety and accessibility, and $800,000 for important safety upgrades to the Gorrie Road railway level crossing near Mataranka including flashing lights and a new train detection system.
Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development minister Catherine King, who will visit Katherine on Thursday, said the investments would deliver sustained benefits for the communities.
“The Australian Government is investing in the Northern Territory supporting partnerships and projects that provide long-term benefits to communities,” Ms King said.
“We remain dedicated to working for all Australians by delivering infrastructure that increases community cohesion, liveability and accessibility.”
Member for Lingiari, Marion Scrymgour said she remained committed to ensuring the future growth and sustainability of remote communities and regional centres across her electorate.
“I welcome the funding announced today for delivering safer roads, more homes and increasing the liveability of these communities through improved recreational and social infrastructure,” she sid.
“I am confident the development of a masterplan for the Nitmiluk Tourism Services Precinct will broaden the community’s understanding and appreciation of Jawoyn history and culture, and strengthen social, cultural and economic outcomes for this precinct.”
