Elite private school students reportedly violently robbed on way to school

The school’s principal told parents the students were ‘confronted by two unknown children’ who attacked them and stole their bike and scooter.

Parents of students at an elite Darwin school have been assured their safety remains the “utmost priority” after two children were reportedly violently robbed on their way to school.

Essington School principal and chief executive Karen Rohrs wrote to parents reminding them of the importance of children “being aware of their surroundings at all times” after the two students were reportedly “confronted by two unknown children” on Friday.

“This email is to inform you about an unfortunate incident that occurred today involving two of our students on their way to school,” she wrote.

“While we do not wish to cause unnecessary alarm, we believe it is important to provide you with accurate information so that you can make informed decisions regarding your child’s safety.

“This morning, on Waters St (Rapid Creek), two of our students were unfortunately confronted by two unknown children. One of our students was punched during the incident, and both their bicycle and electric scooter was stolen.

“We want to assure you that the authorities have been notified and they are actively investigating the matter.”

Ms Rohrs said such incidents were “rare within our school community” and “the safety and security of our students remain our utmost priority”.

“While this incident isolated, we understand that it may cause concern among parents and students,” she wrote.

“We encourage you to have an open conversation with your child about personal safety and the importance of being aware of their surroundings at all times.

“Remind them to report any suspicious activity to a trusted adult or school staff.”

On its website, Essington describes itself as “Darwin’s top independent private school”.

NT Police has been contacted for comment but is yet to respond.

“After hours services are only available for emergencies and major events that involve risk to life or public safety,” its media unit said in an email.

“Media requests received after hours that do not meet the above criteria will be logged for action the next business day.”
