An off-field fight between members of two Darwin-based cricket clubs has sparked an investigation from the National Sports Tribunal.

The physical encounter occurred between representatives of each club near the end of day one of the Premier Grade game at Kahlin Oval on July 8.

It followed Southern Districts’ innings with the side declaring after posting a score of 9/247, before they bowled the Eagles out for 10/194 a week later.

It was referred to the tribunal following an initial meeting between parties concerned under the Northern Cricket Member Protection Policy.

The incident was handled by NT Cricket rather than the competition as it did not occur during or on the field play.

The National Sports Tribunal was formed to hear and resolve sports-related disputes in Australia, usually between sporting organisations or athletes.

It follows a raft of suspensions and reprimands this season in the Darwin & Districts Cricket Competition with the league keen to crack down harder on bad behaviour.

In a statement, Darwin & Districts Cricket Competition president Lachlan Baird said he was not aware of a similar instance in the past of an incident being referred to the national tribunal.

“(We) welcome the opportunity to have the independent resource available to all sports in the NT (to) assist in our ongoing efforts to change the culture and management of behaviour across our competition,” Baird said.

“My thanks to NT Cricket for their assistance in what is an incredibly exciting and unprecedented level of interest and excitement across our game in the 2023 dry season.

“It would be improper for me to provide a more substantive comment at this time.”

Both Darwin and Southern Districts cricket clubs have been contacted for comment.
