CDU Darwin campus to welcome new workers in 2024

New roles will be created at the completion of Darwin CBD’s new university, with workers able to cash in on some enticing pay packets.

A NUMBER of lucrative jobs will soon be available with the opening of a city university in Darwin.

New staff will be employed when Charles Darwin University’s CBD campus opens at the start of 2024, while existing staff will relocate from the Casuarina campus.

The campus will house the Asia Pacific College of Business and Law, the College of Indigenous Futures, Education and the Arts, IT, International College and the Art Gallery.

“Once complete at the end of 2023, the Precinct will house hundreds of existing and new staff including staff and faculty,” a CDU spokeswoman said.

“As a part of the new build there will be growth in teaching staff, lecturers and researchers,” she said.

According to data from Indeed, the average salaries for the three jobs at CDU are $45.68 per hour, $97,607 a year and $108,686 a year respectively.

There are no exact figures of the number of new jobs but the spokeswoman said CDU was actively recruiting for new staff.

As the build on the new campus continues, jobs on the site are also expected to grow, peaking at 300 trade jobs with an emphasis on hiring locally.

It is understood recruiting for those roles have stagnated due to Covid and staff shortages in the construction industry.

“There are more than 100 workers currently on site and that is an increase from 60 in previous months so there is more workers on site than ever before,” the spokeswoman said.

In addition to the new jobs, the university is hoping to welcome hundreds of international students, with applications for courses increasing by 200 per cent.

Business, Jobs and Training Minister Paul Kirby said attracting workers to fill the gaps in shortages was a “primary focus” for the government.

“We’ve got some worker attraction groups that are sitting together and we’ll do some trips overseas,” he said.

“We know that people not just in the Territory but around the nation are struggling for workers, so it’s a matter of us really highlighting to people the opportunities that are here.”

CDU Vice-Chancelllor Scott Bowman said the fact Darwin would soon have a university in the CBD would be enough to attract more workers.

“This is going to be a signpost that Darwin is an educational city,” he said.

The build of the Charles Darwin University is on track to open in early 2024 and not stray too far from the $250m budget.

Mr Bowman estimated the project’s concrete pouring was about halfway.
