FEMALE fishos will be trolling the waters of Dundee Beach today to hook some big barra at the 17th annual Reel Women Barra Classic.
Some 100 competitors have signed on to cast a line in this year’s competition which is being held from May 10-13.
Keen angler Emma Cartwright said she founded the event in 2002 in a bid to draw more ladies to the often “male-dominated” pastime.
“I wanted to encourage women to get into fishing because the more there are, the more families get involved too,” she said.
“We started this comp with only a few ladies and now we’ve got teams making the trip all the way from New South Wales and Perth each year.
“You don’t have to be an expert either, you could be a novice with a rod and a reel and that’s fine because there’s more to Reel Women than just fishing, it’s about fun and friendship.
Funds raised at the event will be donated to Anglicare programs in the NT that assist young women and families in need.
